Direct thermal (DT) labels use heat-sensitive paper and need no ribbon — best for short-life shipping labels (6–12 months). Thermal transfer (TT) labels are printed with a wax or resin ribbon, so the image resists heat, sunlight, moisture and abrasion — best for barcodes, asset tags and product labels that must last years.
